According to an Iranian source, Saudi Arabia is just preparing to launch an offensive aimed at retaking the Bab al-Mandeb Strait from the Houthis. [Oct. 2] The plan involves 100,000 troops backed by Saudi Arabia, as well as US intelligence and advisers. The Houthis are allegedly able to deploy 400,000 own soldiers in the combat. |
A European comment is reminding us that Riyadh's Yemen scheme has already failed before on similar occasions. In 1960 the Saudis armed royalist tribes against Egypt. These guys allegedly took money & guns, dealt with both sides, and kept the weapons. After 2015, Riyadh paid anti-Houthi separatists and tribes. They fought Ansar Allah, fought each other and left while seizing further Saudi assets. The new offensive is therefore expected to hold only while cash and target match. When either slips, it would mean the next failure. [Oct. 2] |

The UAE judiciary has started an investigation into a Flydubai plane incident that was reported on Sept. 30 and its possible connection to "terrorist activity or purpose". The plane, which was carrying 174 passengers, 166 of whom were Israelis, made an emergency landing at a Saudi airport on Wednesday during a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The Emirati company Flydubai reported an argument inside the cockpit that caused the distress signal to be triggered, while Israeli passengers and officials said that the co-pilot attacked the pilot with an axe and severely hurt him, most probably in order to down the plane. As the pilot could open the cockpit door, passengers were able to overwhelm the alleged terrorist. |
